The History of Guardian Wealth Management
Responding to your Needs
A profile on Guardian Wealth Management and our core business values, recently published in the International Adviser, looked back on the growth of our business and the way in which we have responded to the needs of our clients.
GWM Chief Executive, David Howell, started out in the world of insurance at just 18 years old, enabling him to gain a good grounding that would eventually lead to him taking the plunge and setting out on his own.
After spending some time working in Australia, Howell returned to the UK. Inspired by SimplyBiz founder, Ken Davy, with whom he worked, and an entrepreneur and businessman uncle of his, he decided to take a risk and start out on his own – Keystone Consultancy was born.
Initially just focused on providing financial advice to clients in the UK, Howell soon realised that as his clients’ circumstances changed, he needed to respond to these changes.
The biggest change he encountered was a new trend for working abroad; and it soon became clear that his service provision needed to respond to this.
To develop the International side of the business, Howell joined forces with fellow professional John Hasberry and they re-branded as Guardian Wealth Management.
Growing With You
As any good business knows, if you grow with your clients, your clients don’t outgrow you; Howell and Hasberry realised that if they were to keep these displaced clients, they needed to move with them, ensuring that their financial needs were met not just at home, but when they were away too.
They opened an office in Brussels (regulated by Belgium’s CBFA), followed by another in Geneva (regulated by Switzerland’s OAR-G) – this was in direct response to their UN clients who continued to need their expert advice.
This mutually beneficial move led to expansion of their client base, with the resources to provide fully regulated financial planning services in both Europe and the UK.
Middle Eastern Promise
Building on their European successes, they branched out a little further afield in 2009, opening a new office in Qatar (authorised by Qatar’s QFCRA).
With the country poised and preparing to host the World Cup in 2022, a huge stream of skilled expat workers are entering the country – all of whom can benefit from Guardian Wealth Management’s financial planning services.
As Howell notes, with 86 out of every 100 residents being born outside of the country, the need for a locally authorised company such as GWM is apparent.
Guardian Wealth Management now has advisers helping to invest and protect nearly £170m for more than 5,000 clients in the UK and abroad.
We are currently in the process of attaining Chartered status, via the Chartered Insurance Institute and we are making the International Standards Organisations ISO22222 accreditation a standard requirement for all of our UK advisers.
Crucially, we are regulated in every jurisdiction in which we operate and we apply the highest standards right across our professional offerings, in the UK, Europe and Qatar.
